PHYS 498, Senior Seminar

The requirements of Phys 498 "Senior Seminar" are to attend the departmental seminars scheduled during the semester, to participate in the question/discussion period of the seminars, to present at the Physics and Astronomy Department seminar series a 20-minute oral presentation of original research, and to submit for publication on the Department website a webpage describing the research.

Grades:
The final grade for the course will be determined by the points accumulated in three different components of the course requirements. Letter grades will be assigned based on the following scheme:
A  -  9 or 10 points accumulated
B  -  8 points accumulated
C  -  7 points accumulated
D  -  6 points accumulated
F  -  5 or fewer points accumulated

Points earned for attendance at departmental seminars
2 points -    zero absences at seminars scheduled during the semester
1 point -    one absence at seminars scheduled during the semester
0 points -    two or more absences at seminars scheduled during the semester

Points earned for participation at departmental seminars
3 points -    at four or more seminars during the semester, the student asked an appropriate question of the speaker
2 points -    at three seminars during the semester the student asked an appropriate question of the speaker
1 point -    at two seminar during the semester the student asked an appropriate question of the speaker
0 points -    the student failed to ask questions at more than one of the seminars scheduled for this semester

Points earned for 20-minute oral presentation of original research
3 points -    the content of the presentation was high quality
   and the delivery of the presentation was high quality
   and student made a serious effort to prepare for the presentation
2 points -    two of the above three criteria were met
1 point -    one of the above criteria was met
0 points -    student did not make the required presentation

Points earned for submission of HTML file summarizing the original research project that was the the topic of the oral presentation, ready to be incorporated into the Department's website as an example of research performed by WKU physics majors
2 points -    the production value of the submitted file is of high quality
   and the content of the submitted file is of high quality
1 point -    one of the above criteria was met
0 points -    the students did not submit a file by the specified deadline, or by the end of finals week if no deadline is specified
