Images of galaxies in the Local Group
Our galaxy belongs to a small cluster of galaxies known as the Local
Group, which contains roughly 40 galaxies in a volume about 1 Mpc in
diameter. Copyrighted images of several of the galaxies in the Local
Group may be found in the archive pages of the Anglo-Australian
Observatory (AAO). Their archives contain a wide variety of fine
images.
Check out the following images of Local Group galaxies on the AAO's "Galaxies"
page. Note the variety of morphologies. Small galaxies are often
distorted by the gravitational effects of nearby large galaxies.
- Andromeda galaxy (M31): INT 1
- Large Magellanic cloud: UKS 14
- Small Magellanic cloud: UKS 17
- M33: INT 5
- NGC 6822: AAT 26
- Leo I: AAT 51
